The Maternal strengths report

What if motherhood has been one of the most overlooked leadership development experiences in the workforce?

For years, workplace conversations around motherhood have centered on burnout, attrition, flexibility, and the motherhood penalty.

But this report explored a different question:

What leadership capabilities does motherhood develop?

And the findings were striking.

Across every single leadership capability measured, participants reported growth after becoming mothers.

Based on survey responses from mothers across industries, career stages, and countries.

key findings:

before vs. after becoming mothers

Participants were asked to rate their perceived leadership-related capabilities before and after becoming mothers. The percentages below reflect the average increase in reported capability before vs. after becoming mothers.

+123% Time management

Mothers reported being more than twice as capable at managing time effectively after becoming mothers.

+100% — Strategic Energy Allocation

Mothers reported becoming twice as intentional about where they allocate their time, energy, attention, and resources.

+83% — Negotiation

Mothers reported a substantial increase in their ability to negotiate for their needs, flexibility, boundaries, compensation, and support after becoming mothers.

+60% — Communication

Mothers reported a 60% increase in initiating difficult conversations and communicating clearly under pressure.

+41% — Conflict Management

Mothers reported increased capability in navigating tension, competing needs, and emotionally charged situations.

+27% — Empathy

Mothers reported increased empathy and awareness of others’ needs in workplace interactions.

+19% — Resilience

Mothers reported increased resilience and ability to recover from setbacks and disruptions.

+18% — Adaptability

Mothers reported increased adaptability navigating changing priorities, uncertainty, and unpredictability.

And across all the capabilities, working moms reported an increase in their confidence (levels 4 or 5) in every single one

and One of the most surprising findings was…

The largest increases were not tied to empathy or emotional awareness (which is often the cultural expectation).

Many of the strongest increases mothers reported were tied to operational leadership capabilities like prioritization, communication, negotiation, decision-making, and strategic use of time and energy.

The findings suggest many mothers perceive significant growth in the exact capabilities modern workplaces say they value most in leaders.
